Renewing her teaching certificate in Secondary Spanish after a hiatus of many years, this is a summary of recent training to upgrade her skills to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
About Me
Hi! I'm Peggy Strang (formally Margaret L.) and am developing this ePortfolio in conjunction with a class I'm taking at Lorain County Community College in Educational Technology.
I'm what you might call a non-traditional teacher candidate. Many years ago I graduated from The Western College in Oxford, Ohio, which is no more. At the time I qualified for an Ohio Teacher Certificate in secondary Spanish. After graduating I started a M.A. in Spanish Literature at Michigan State University, but only attended 2 quarters due to my impending marriage. Hitting the job market in February, I despaired of finding a teaching job, and took a job in industry where I was able to use my language skills.
Fast forward to today, where I find myself retired from my several careers, my children grown, working as a substitute for our local school district. At the suggestion of a teacher friend of mine, I inquired of the Ohio Board of Education what I needed to renew my certificate. The answer came back 12 semester hours (of which I already had 7) in my field. That brought me to Lorain County Community College, where I'm taking the Educational Technology course mentioned above and a Spanish Grammar Review course. I expect to requalify early in 2012.
My husband Jim and I have three wonderful grown children, one of whom still lives with us and also attends LCCC. In my spare time I knit and weave, read, and play hammered dulcimer.
I look forward to spending the next several years in the classroom sharing my love of learning and the Spanish language with 21st century students.
